Lil’ Red at Bordo Bello 2011

Lil' Red for Bordo Bello 2011

Bordo Bello was an awesome event last night. Bordo Bello is a skateboard design fundraiser helping to fund arts in the Denver area. And let me say that last night there seemed to be no lack of support either. 200 plus boards on display and up for auction. Artists are given virtually free reign over what they want to with the boards. You can either modify them yourself or opt to have it printed by Board Pusher. I went with the board pusher option and submitted Lil’ Red. I had been filled with self doubt as to whether or not she was the right choice for this and to as if I really liked her or not. All this was laid to rest when I saw the finished printed board and fell in love with her immediately. The colors looked amazing and to see people walking by and staring and pointing at her was absolutely thrilling. I was tempted to bid on her myself. Congratulations and thank you to the lucky stiff who took her home.

Congratulations CYC On a Great Night!

Colorado Youth for a Change Back to School Night

Congratulations are in order for Colorado Youth for a Change today. It was a very successful Back to School Night last night at Comedy Works South. Chuck Roy mc’d  and Kenny Kane headlined the 5th Annual Comedy Benefit. The amazing show was preceded by a Silent Auction and a Live Auction. In addition to that, Superintendent John Barry of the Aurora Public Schools received the inaugural Innovation in Education Award. It was a pleasure to not only have designed the collateral materials for the event but to also have donated a one of a kind poster for the silent auction. Congratulations once again and a thank you for bringing me on board to be a part of it.

Back to School Night

I’ve been brought on to design the Colorado Youth for a Change Back To School Night postcards and event programs. This is very exciting as it is their 5th Annual Comedy Benefit. Worked out a cool illustration for it and the proofs are out to be approved by the committee. Also I am designing a poster to be donated to the silent auction that will hopefully be signed by the headlining comedian performing that night.

I Love My Boys

So I just finished two paintings for my wonderful and amazing children. Anyone who reads this and has children knows what the term “wonderful and amazing” means. In any event, I painted each of my boys a painting. I made Logan a self portrait of his most prized possession in the universe, Blue Beary. Colin, well Colin gets a painting of what excites him the most, STARS! I’ll be taking photos of the paintings soon and posting them here as well as Facebook for all to see. It’s funny that Father’s Day is just round the corner and I’m making things for my boys. Logan and Colin I love you both and can’t wait for you to see your paintings.

The Going Ons…

So there has been a bit going on lately. The most major thing is that I have decided that it is time to rename Steve Fivehouse Graphic Design. A year ago the name made sense, even six months ago. Now I have found after introducing myself and highlighting the illustration side of me, that the term “Graphic Design” outside of the creative community seems to have a limiting effect. I feel that the term has narrowed me into a realm of brochures, magazines, and reports. While this may be part of what I can do, it seems that people view it as all I do. It wasn’t until I started telling people and marketing the illustration stuff that people actually started approaching me with those types of projects. So considering that illustration style projects (and posters) are what got me into this business in the first place, I seems only logical that I rename the business. Have a name already picked out that will be able to encompass a broad range of things and ditch the pigeon-holing and stereotyping that has occurred. This has totally been a valuable lesson in business. The name makes the brand and the brand attracts the clients.

Also I have started a personal project. I am calling Codename: Project Poster. The goal of this is to keep my creative juices flowing and to try out new things. Experiment with new styles of designs and illustration techniques. So what I have been doing is to take phrases, words, sights, etc. that stand out from some day or another and to try to make a poster out of it. I have a handful of posters already completed as well. The ultimate goal is that once I have enough to assemble them into a book and then possibly get it published. I plan on placing a gallery of the posters here on the blog so that as I finish them people can come here to view them. I am also planning on including client posters, self-promo posters, and just about any other poster that I create during the process of this endeavor.

Stay tuned to find out about the new name of the company and see how the posters come out!

Been Absent, I Mean Busy

I feel bad that I haven’t posted anything recent;y but I’ve been somewhat busy with some side projects I’ve got going. I finished inventorying all my comic books and started to get them ready to put them on the comics website that I’ve been working on. In regards to that website, I have the basic foundation for that built up with most of the code corrected and ready for content. So now I just need to finish putting the content together. Easier said than done. I’ve got something like 100 comics that need to be prepared (thank goodness for Photoshop actions). Also I have just finished writing the first draft of my very first comic book script. Let the editing begin. Stay posted for more about all of this.

Splash Page In Place

So this is the header for “Steve’s Comic Corner” site that I have started working on. There is a temporary splash page element in place as well till the rest of the content gets fully fleshed out. Everything was penciled out first and then inked using the Sakura Micron pens and Prismacolor markers. Haven’t had a chance to try out using brushes and quill pens but fully intend to. I then scanned them in and added the color in Photoshop. This has been a very fun and rewarding experience thus far. More to come…

Comic Books ‘R’ Me

So I drew and inked out the header to a new site I am developing for myself. I had started inventorying and cataloging all my comic books. Decided that I should make a site that has all this stuff on it. So the header is all inked and ready to scan. The framework for the site is also in process. I’ll keep updates here for anyone who wishes to look. Keep you posted!

Special Thanks to Auto Parts Nerd

Just finished up a handful of more images for the Auto Parts Nerd. Three more headers and reworked the sidebar navigation images. The three headers include the Brakes part page, the Brands and Products page, and the Rebates page. A real sense of branding cohesion is developing on the site and things are looking good for them. If I keep doing images like this for them I’ll have to create a special gallery just for them. Thank you Auto Parts Nerd for your continued support of Steve Fivehouse Graphic Design.
